IN THE TWILIGHTING [EP]

released November 20, 2020

songs of the very last light of day; the hour of cold and dim; the time when one’s spirit yearns for the sun again with its riches of warmth and shimmering light. It’s a time of plaintive reminiscence; of placidness in the depth of shadow and imagination as the blanket of the night slowly begins to enfold. It’s a time for sighs. For a serene kind of mourning.
Dusk is the safe bed of grief. Its gentle light begs no solutions.

This is the follow up release to my EP, song of the city, both of which are about dusk. Though it only spans five songs, this crepuscular work was designed to be as robust as possible. I aimed to write as complete of a story as I could with only 5 songs. Twilight, after all, only lasts but a short time. Still, the hour is no less fulfilled for its brevity. I have attempted to accomplish the same concise fulfillment. My friend Micah Taylor terms this as a “short story”. I affectionately call it the same.

Dusk causes me to think of the end of beloved times. It causes me to think of seasons of life that fade much in the same way as the sun at the close of day. Our lives, indistinct in history, have their own way of seasons and are as impermanent as the autumn light. When leaving a beloved time behind, I find myself looking back with such fondness, and feeling no comfort from the post-sunset light; only a hollow chill that reaches to my bones as I realize that I don’t know what’s going to happen next. And yet, even in the somber light, I find the strength to hope again in the Lord, who is our only light, even when there’s little visible light before me. For what other hope do we have? It is hope in a strength which exists beyond faith and seeing. It is a mystery.
Mostly I still feel cold. And my prayers at this time most often end without resolution.

While dwelling at length upon these things, in the twilighting, I have found that dusk is no time for explanations. It’s a time for waiting.

Released February 26, 2020

In the summer of 2019, I lived out of my vehicle in and around Lafayette, Colorado. I was an intern under the masterful artists/producers, Dave Wilton (A Boy and his Kite, Loud Harp) and Aaron Strumpel. Learning from them was truly a life-changing experience and I am ever grateful to them.

My week with Aaron and Dave ended on Thursday afternoons, during which I would drive up into the mountains for the weekend to hike, camp, and soak in the beauty of the Colorado wilderness. I spent these long weekends alone.

This quiet EP is a journal of this time. It was written and compiled in solitary nights atop windy and pine covered hills, nestled in the high-altitude valleys of former mining towns, and beside campfires in rugged boulder fields.
It was a time of strained, long distance relationship. It was a time of being distinctly away from home. Because of these things, even while I was in these grand and silent places, I was often of an unsettled and anxious heart. Though I was in the serene wilderness, my mind and heart often felt more like a busy and unkindly city.

These are songs of evening and candlelight, of anxiety and striving, and of yearning for the presence of the Lord and my best friend.

Using descriptive arrangements and vivid poetry, these songs tell the story of a young boy’s venture through a series of thunderstorms that cause him to have a central shift in perspective, with part one telling the story and part two expounding upon it.
'Journals from a Squall' was fully written and recorded over the course of a year and a half as a visual album. The visual counterpart is available in full on YouTube.
